What Does
Utility Corridor Mean?
A utility corridor is an underground passageway through which electrical, water supply and sewer lines and – in the case of district heating – steam lines pass.
These corridors allow grouping of utility lines in a single, accessible space, eliminate conflicts between those lines, minimize or eliminate trenching and reduce or eliminate manholes.
Utility corridors for communications utilities, such as fiber optic, telephone and television cables minimize the need to disrupt traffic and other surface activities when systems require upgrades or repair.
Trenchlesspedia Explains Utility Corridor
A utility corridor, at first glance, may appear to be a set from any one of several popular spy movies. Often they may be large enough to accommodate people or small vehicles, such as small pickups or forklifts. Unlike the evil purposes of such corridors in film, the utility corridor's benign purpose is to facilitate quick access and quick repairs to the cables, wiring and utility services that are grouped together in the utility corridor.
