What Does Remote Control System Mean?

A remote control system, as it pertains to microtunneling, is the system that allows an operator to monitor and control the microtunnel boring machine (MTBM), the pipe jacking process and the guidance system from a fixed location.

The system is fully computerized and also provides the operator with constant useful feedback about the drilling process.

Trenchlesspedia Explains Remote Control System

The remote control system allows for the drilling of microtunnels without requiring personnel to enter the drill shaft. Since MTBMs are smaller than regular tunnel boring machines, it is not possible to have an operator positioned within the machinery. Instead, MTBMs must be remotely controlled from a control room located on the surface or next to the drill shaft.

The remote control system is used by the operator to:

  • Control the speed of the boring process
  • Steer the MBTM
  • Synchronize pipe jacking and advancement of the drill
  • View the boring in real time and
  • Control the slurry injection
