What Does Polyester Thermoplastic Polyurethane Mean?

Polyester thermoplastic polyurethane (polyester TPU) belongs to a class of polyurethane plastics known for their many desirable properties, including their resistance to oil, grease and abrasion. Polyesters contain the ester functional group in their main chain and, depending on their composition, can also be classified as a thermoset polymer.

Polyester thermoplastic polyurethane is also known simply as polyester.

Trenchlesspedia Explains Polyester Thermoplastic Polyurethane

Polyesters are used to manufacture various items including bottles, films, tarps, filters and insulating tape. As a fiber, polyester can be spun together with other natural fibers to produce cloth blends for use in clothing.

Polyester thermoplastic polyurethane is known as the workhorse of thermoplastic polymers. Of all thermoplastic polymers, polyester is the most flexible regarding the sheer number of applications. Polyester possesses excellent mechanical properties such as:

  • High tensile strength
  • Puncture resistance
  • Superior durability in abrasive environments
  • Outstanding performance in contact with fuels and solvents

Due to its strong adhesive properties, polyester TPUs are preferred as the resin of choice for cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liners in trenchless construction applications.
