The American Petroleum Institute Mean?
The American Petroleum Institute (API) is the only national trade association that represents all aspects of the American oil and gas industry. It was founded on March 20, 1919. Originally, it was based in New York City, but in 1969 it relocated to Washington, D.C. Its 400 corporate members are involved in various aspects of the petroleum industry, including:
- Producers
- Refiners
- Suppliers
- Pipeline operators
- Marine transporters
- Service and supply companies

The API has been the leader in developing petroleum and petrochemical equipment and operating standards for the oil and gas industry, with over 600 standards and recommended practices. It is designed to assist professionals to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of their projects, adhere to legislative and regulatory requirements, follow health and safety standards, and protect the environment. Many of these standards have been incorporated into state and federal regulations and by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
API also has individual certification programs that recognize and certify industry professionals with knowledge of industry inspection codes. API represents the petroleum industry to the public, federal government, state governments and the media. It negotiates with regulatory agencies, represents the industry in legal proceedings, participates in coalitions and works in partnership with other associations to achieve public policy goals of its members.
