What Does Comminution Mean?

Comminution can be defined as the process of reducing solid material such as rock into fragments by crushing, grinding or drilling. To predict a rocks comminution behavior test methods are used, the results of which can be used to plan downhole tool assemblies. Determining the strength of rock is also essential for engineers to design tunnels by selecting appropriate comminution devices.

Trenchlesspedia Explains Comminution

Rock strength can be measured by a number of available tests based on rock mechanics. Fragmentation of rock can be best described by principles of fracture mechanics i.e. fracture toughness, which has been found to be successfully utilizable in the comminution process.

Stone fragmentation is a dynamic fracture process and requires tensile or shear strength induced, nucleation, growth and coalescence of flaws.
